Law and Society student Claire Gjertsen wins a PURE award for research on mental illness in Canadian penitentiaries

Congratulations to Law and Society and History student Claire Gjertsen, who has won a Program for Undergraduate Research Experience (PURE) award for summer 2015.

Working with Dr. Ted McCoy, Claire will work on a project entitled “Mental Illness and Gender in the Early Canadian Penitentiary.” The project is based on a qualitative analysis of medical and popular texts from the early nineteenth-century that describe the rise of medical and social discourse surrounding female offenders. Claire will bring experience with social, gender, and legal history to questions about mental illness and the penitentiary.
