Thank you for your interest in the graduate program in the Department of Sociology at the University of Calgary.
The next possible admission date is September 2013 with a deadline for application of February 1, 2013.

We are eager to welcome international students to our Graduate Program.  But we do want to be sure that those whom we admit have adequate background preparation in sociology.  For students interested in our MA program, this normally means an undergraduate degree with a major in Sociology.  For prospective PhD students, we normally require an MA degree in Sociology.  In both cases, students should have excellent course work grades in three core areas - sociological statistics, sociological research methodology, and classical and contemporary sociological theory - as well as in several other substantive courses in sociology.  Students with no previous background in sociology will not be considered for our graduate program.

For information regarding English Language Proficiency Requirements, please look at the information in this link:  http://www.ucalgary.ca/admissions/elp

In order to help international students make appropriate application decisions, we recommend that you first contact Vivian Hansen, Student Administrator, at vhansen [at] ucalgary [dot] ca.   She will be able to advise on the next steps.  In some cases, she will request that you send a copy of your transcripts, and if appropriate, your TOEFL or other English Language Proficiency record.  The address is:  Department of Sociology, University of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta, Canada T2N 1N4. These records can also be faxed to: 403/282-9298.  We will then be in a better position to ascertain your suitability for our program.  In some cases, however, you will first need to have your records evaluated by a service such as: Alberta Employment and Immigration's International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS).

Please note that complete evaluations of international documents are done only when you make a full application for admission to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Thank you again for your interest in our program.
