In 2008 the Department of Sociology began fundraising for a new Ph.D. entrance scholarship. In 2013 the scholarship fund was endowed and as of 1 November 2016 we had raised over $46,000.
This scholarship is named in order to recognize and honour the work of all former and current faculty members in the Department of Sociology at the University of Calgary as well as our many BA, MA and PhD graduates who have gone on to successful academic careers as sociologists at other institutions.
The value of the scholarship is a minimum of $1,000 although the most recent award was for $1.400. It is awarded to a student entering full-time doctoral studies in the Department of Sociology, University of Calgary. The objective of the scholarship is to give the department an additional tool to help it recruit high quality Ph.D. entrants on a yearly basis.
Our immediate goal is to grow the endowment to $50,000 by the end of 2016. Please consider making a one-time gift or perhaps a monthly pledge to this scholarship fund. Please note that the University of Calgary has the ability to match donations to endowments through the Government of Alberta's Access to the Future Fund. Though this shouldn't be the primary reason you make a gift, as the U. of C. currently has a long list of donations waiting to be matched, we wanted you to know that this is a way the Government of Alberta and the University of Calgary are increasing the value of the gift you are so generously considering.
All donors are acknowledged on the department's web site (unless you prefer to remain anonymous). Those who make a cumulative lifetime donation of $25,000 or more will be designated as "lead donors" on the web site. To make a donation through a secure web site, please click here.
All donations qualify for a charitable tax receipt. Thanks!
