PhD Entrance Scholarship

The Department of Sociology has received approval to begin fundraising efforts for a new Ph.D. entrance scholarship. Our new scholarship is named in order to recognize and honour the work of all former and current faculty members; working together over the past 45+ years, our faculty members have built the department into one of the top research-intensive departments of sociology in Canada.

Over the past five years we have recruited an average of five new Ph.D. students to our department, and we now have more Ph.D. than M.A. students. The objective of this new scholarship is to give the department an additional tool to help it recruit high quality Ph.D. entrants on a yearly basis.

The Sociology Professors PhD Graduate Entrance Scholarship is an endowed scholarship. It will be awarded on merit to an entering doctoral student and is valued at $5,000 per year over the first two years of study. We must raise $100,000 before the award can be offered. Our long-term goal is to raise $200,000.

Please consider making a one-time gift or perhaps a multi-year pledge to this graduate student scholarship fund. Please note that the University of Calgary has the ability to match donations to endowments through the Government of Alberta's Access to the Future Fund. Though this shouldn't be the primary reason you make a gift, as the U. of C. currently has a long list of donations waiting to be matched, we wanted you to know that this is a way the Government of Alberta and the University of Calgary are increasing the value of the gift you are so generously considering.

All donors will be acknowledged on the department's web site (unless you prefer to remain anonymous). Those who make a cumulative lifetime donation of $25,000 or more will be designated as "lead donors" on the web site. To make a donation through a secure web site, please click here. All donations qualify for a charitable tax receipt. Thanks!
