- Professor Emeritus - Sociology
Kevin is an internationally recognized expert in the Sociology of Sport, and on matters related to violence in particular. He has authored or edited 14 books, including: The Suffering Body in Sport: Shifting Thresholds of Risk, Pain and Injury; Sport, Violence and Society (Second Edition); Reflections on Sociology of Sport: Ten Questions, Ten Scholars, Ten Perspectives; Sociology of Sport: A Global Subdiscipline in Review; Sport, Social Development and Peace; Qualitative Research on Sport and Physical Culture; Deviance and Social Control in Sport; Global Olympics: Historical and Sociological Studies of the Modern Games; and Sport and Gender in Canada (Second Edition). Kevin has also published over 100 journal articles, book chapters and book reviews. His research and teaching interests bridge Criminology and Sociology of Sport, an interface revealing itself in studies of on- and off-field violence, litigation, surveillance and civility. Additionally, he has published widely on matters relating to gender, body and health, and the use of animals in sport. Kevin has served on the editorial boards of numerous academic journals including Sociology of Sport Journal, International Review for the Sociology of Sport, Qualitative Research in Sport, Exercise and Health, Social Inclusion and Soccer and Society, and served two elected terms as Vice-President of the international body in the field (International Sociology of Sport Association). He is also an award-winning teacher, and a regular graduate student supervisor. Kevin grew up in the north of England, where he became a passionate fan of Liverpool Football Club (an ongoing obsession). He played varsity rugby on both sides of the Atlantic and continues to dabble, often injured, in a number of recreational sports.
