Dr. Ariel Ducey and team awarded research grant for pelvic floor surgery

Associate Professor of Sociology Dr. Ariel Ducey

Associate Professor of Sociology Dr. Ariel Ducey and an interdisciplinary team of researchers, among whom Dr. Ducey is Principal Investigator, have been awarded a two-year Canadian Institute for Health Research (CIHR) grant to examine how devices and procedures are adopted for pelvic floor surgery, and to use their findings to develop a health care ethic that attends to how values impact everyday, seemingly technical and routine, decisions and practices in medicine.

Using multiple qualitative methods, this project examines the moral economies of these surgeries; that is, constellations of emotions and values that bring ways of knowing, actions/behaviors, and specific contexts and situations into a configuration that allows medical professionals to understand themselves and their actions.

Co-investigators for the grant are Dr. Sue Ross, Professor and Cavarzan Chair in Mature Women’s Health Research, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Alberta; Dr. Magali Robert, surgeon and Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Calgary; and Dr. Barry Hoffmaster, Professor of Philosophy at the University of Western Ontario.
