The learning environment in the Department of Sociology is enhanced by the diverse research interests of our faculty, who have ties to other departments in the Faculty of Social Sciences (ie: Anthropology, History, Psychology) and to other faculties at the University of Calgary (ie: Communication and Culture, Environmental Design, Law, Medicine). They are active participants in interdisciplinary research units including the Calgary Institute for the Humanities, the Research Unit for Socio-Legal Studies, Institute for Gender Research, the Canadian Research Institute for Law and the Family and the minor in Indigenous Studies. These ties reflect ongoing attempts to achieve strong intellectual communities across disciplinary divisions. They also signal our willingness to cross disciplinary boundaries in our research and, therefore, in our teaching. Ties to scholars around the world enhance our ability to provide an international perspective on sociological research. Faculty with knowledge of and ties to colleagues in other fields and other countries are well placed to help majors and non-majors make the relevant cross-disciplinary and cross-national connections. Students are encourage to take full advantage of these intellectural networks throughout their programs of undergraduate studies at the University of Calgary.

The interdisciplinary and international components of our undergraduate programs are enhanced by a journal housed in the Department of Sociology (Journal of Comparative Family Studies) and by activities sponsored by the Canada Research Chair in Comparative Public Policy, Dr. Anne H. Gauthier.
