marisol

Marisol Narvaez

is a fourth year honours student conducting research on the experiences and perceptions of frontline domestic violence workers in the City of Calgary. As a former women’s shelter volunteer, Marisol is interested in determining the effectiveness of current policies and procedures used by frontline workers in various women’s shelters across the city. It is her hope that her research may shed more light on the issue of domestic violence, while also providing valuable suggestions of policy and procedure changes.

The Differential Treatment of Male and Female Sex Offenders in the Canadian Justice System

My study explores whether there is differential treatment of male and female sex offenders in the Canadian Justice System. By examining the sentence length, the application of the “sex offender” label, registration in the sex offender registry, and the conditions of release after incarceration. The aim of this research is to determine whether or not the Canadian Justice system demonstrates a bias towards either gender.

Gary Barron

As a young boy working as an apprentice lumberjack, Gary often read works by famous sociologists such as, Karl Marx, and Max Weber. Eventually he saved enough money to move to the big city and attend the University of Calgary where he is now an honours student and VP Events of the Sociology Students Association.

His current research involves a look at Calgary's recent Public Behaviour Bylaw from the social construction of social problems perspective.
