Date & Time:
March 29, 2017 | 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm
SS 921
Dr. Scott McLean

This presentation will examine three moments in the history of the Euro-Canadian colonization of Inuit residing in what is now known as the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut: (1) the evolution of social welfare policies and interventions from 1916 through 1960; (2) the development of adult educational programs and curricula from 1950 through 1992; and (3) the efforts of Euro-Canadian adult educators to interpret and respond to the resistance of their Inuit students from 1979 through 1991. Based on archival and ethnographic research, this presentation will illuminate a fascinating chapter in Canadian history, and challenge conventional interpretations of colonial processes.
