Program Description

Over the past several years and in collaboration with the Group Study Programs Office, the Department of Sociology has organized successful Spring programs in Colima, Mexico. Colima is located in central Mexico, approximately one hour in-land of the popular coastal town of Manzanillo, and five hours by car south of Puerto Vallarta.

In May 2014, we will return to the beautiful city of Colima with another group of students for what will be our sixth program. There, all students will enroll in 3 half courses (see above), for which they will receive normal UofC credit. Students will ‘buddy up’ in pairs with local ‘homestay’ families, and we will meet daily for a combination of in-class and field trip experiences. The latter include trips to surrounding villages and towns, galleries and museums, and various other cultural venues.

The cost of the program is anticipated to be approximately $5,700. This sounds expensive, but it includes almost everything -- tuition fees, homestay, most meals, U of Calgary and Colima fees, field trips, and airfare. Only your personal costs are not included.

Ideally, students accepted into the program will be Majors in Sociology who have already taken several Sociology classes. However, other good students who demonstrate the ‘right’ reasons for wanting to be a part of our ‘team’ will also be considered and pre-requisites could be waived.

Information on (and links for) cost breakdowns, application forms, and deadlines will follow soon.

Our first Information Session on ‘Colima 2014’ will take place on Monday October 28, 4-6pm, in SS921. This is a critical session to attend and will be led both by myself and Group Study Programs. Once our team is assembled, we will meet on a regular basis in the Winter term and, by the time we leave for Mexico, all of your questions will be answered.

Sociology in Colima is an established and highly successful program that all students enjoy and some students have referred to as ‘life changing’. It takes place in a safe part of Mexico, and is partnered by a wonderful International Centre at the University of Colima. I encourage you to apply!
