About the Department

The Department of Sociology is characterized by diverse research interests among our faculty, ranging from topics such as physicians’ well-being, non-traditional parenting and family arrangements, aboriginal chiefs, sport violence, unionization in the Crowsnest Pass, GPS applications to high-risk offenders, to name a few.

Our faculty interests involve collaborating with researchers in other departments throughout the Faculty of Arts (e.g., Anthropology, Communication & Culture, Geography, History and Psychology, to name a few) and with researchers in Faculties as diverse as Engineering, Environmental Design, Law, and Medicine.  Many of our faculty members are active participants in interdisciplinary research units, including the Centre for Military and Strategic Studies, the Institute for Gender Research, the Medical Ward of the 21st Century and the Canadian Research Institute for Law and the Family.  These ties reflect ongoing efforts to maintain and enhance strong intellectual communities across disciplines.  As well, ties to scholars around the world enhance our ability to provide an international perspective on sociological research.  Faculty with knowledge of and ties to colleagues in other fields and other countries are well placed to help sociology students make relevant cross-disciplinary and cross-national connections.  Students are encouraged to take full advantage of these intellectual networks.
